The design for the city of Ljubljana was conceived by Architect Jože Plečnik (featured on the obverse). Following the disintegration of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a desire to create new nations sparked various township projects in the region. New approaches of the Modernist movement were introduced by the urban planners and architects. The transformation from a just peripheral town into the nation’s capital, ‘Plečnik’s Ljubljana’ is an excellent example of on an architectural dialogue between his modern interventions and the existing older city. The banknotes from 1992 also echoed the same trend, a shift in the monetary imagery post the USSR break-up into a modernistic influence that continues on in the 2022 2-euro commemorative coin.
