The Vilnius Cathedral is seen on Lithuania’s banknote since 1991 when the nation was formed after the break-up of the USSR. Lithuania became part of the eurozone in 2015. The cathedral is part of the historic city centre comprising of three castles that have withstood various invasions and wars for over 500-odd years. Being an important political centre from the 13th century, Vilnius had a profound influence on the cultural and architectural development of eastern Europe and its city centre stands witness to the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical styles of building and design. The cathedral and its adjoining bell tower continue to stay emblazoned on monetary imagery on the nation’s commemorative 2-euro coin from 2017.
