Mount Fuji (12,389 ft) Japan’s highest peak and stratovolcano was declared a heritage site not under the category of a natural site but a cultural one! The mountain has represented Japan since ancient times. This view from Lake Motosu with its near-perfect reflection also called ‘Sakasa-Fuji’ or upside-down Fuji. Various references from popular culture dating back to the 9th century attempt to describe and capture this magnificent mountain. ‘Fuji-san’ fondly referred to by the Japanese has adorned their notes from the 1938 (50 Sen), 1969 (¥500), 2004 (¥1.000) (this note) and on the forthcoming ¥1.000 (2024). Emblazoned across almost a century, the revered mountain continues to summit the peak of Japan’s monetary imagery.
