The queen of the Greek Gods, Hera has a temple dedicated to her at the ancient site of Olympia. It was at this sanctuary that the Olympic Idea was born, making the ‘Olympic games’ a unique universal symbol of sport and fair competition. One of the many competitors, Discobolus, displaying athletic energy and balance on his bare frame originally sculpted by Myron of Eleutherae is seen on Greece’s money. The torch of the Olympic flame continues to be lit at this venue even today. This banknote pays tribute to the ancient Olympic tradition started by the Greeks that continues until date, over 2,500 years later on the national side of its 2-Euro bi-metallic commemorative coin from 2004.
