The Boyana Church located close to the nation’s capital Sofia is proudly displayed on the nation’s banknotes when it was re-constituted as the Republic of Bulgaria post the fall of the iron curtain. It joined the European Union in 2007 and is scheduled to adopt the Euro in 2025. The monetary imagery changed drastically in the 1990s as this banknote displays, celebrating the nation’s rich heritage and culture, a reflection of the changing times. The Boyana Church also went through its own changes from the 10th century with additions in the 12th and 20th centuries deeming this site as one of the most preserved monuments of east European medieval art.
